It's that time of year again.

The holiday season will quickly be upon us and there are so many reasons to celebrate, to be joyful, and to be thankful. It is an exciting time of the year! But admittedly we always feel an impending sense of doom, which is tamed and pushed down by a society that condemns and laughs at those who hold non-human animal life as special and sacred, too.

Our feelings of doom arise because 45 million of our feathered friends will end their short tortured lives in the coming weeks to have their bodies ripped apart, their flesh baked, and their secretions lopped up in Thanksgiving fixin's. And for what? The fleeting pleasure of consuming another being because it is "tradition"?

Excuse us for being blunt, and we hope that most of you know us as loving, kind and generous people that never force our animal compassion onto anyone. If you are so inclined to read our blog to this point, though, let it be known that this time of year hurts us, as we say, in the quiet corners of our hearts; hearts that know for sure that animals can feel fear and pain, and can suffer greatly.

In the 3 to 4 months that these beautiful and sweet creatures are "plumped" for the Thanksgiving table, they are tightly confined in dark "sheds", and their beaks and parts of their toes are amputated without anesthesia so that they don't scratch or peck each other to death in their hysteria. For the most part, these babies never see the light of day until they are transported to be strung up by their feet in shackles at the slaughterhouses, and killed ruthlessly in ways that we cannot even put into writing, as it is so completely disturbing to even think about.

On that note, we love and support the organization Farm Sanctuary, and in fact our adopted cow, Norman, lives at the sanctuary in Orland, California. If after reading this entry you find even a shred of compassion for these sweet little sentient beings that we call turkeys, please read about the Adopt-a-Turkey project at farmsanctuary.org. We are happily sponsoring Phoenix and Faye!

And if you need some non-Turkey ideas to make your Thanksgiving really special this year, check out: www.adoptaturkey.org/aat/recipes/index.html. We've made a Tofu-rkey for 5 years running now, and they are delicious.

Even the president pardons his turkey every year. Will you?
